Singing the Gospel

In the book of Colossians 3:16 we read how music and Christian education form a powerful alliance to assist individual believers and the body of Christ, His beloved Church. The Common English Bible states it this way. The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. First of all, the word of Christ is the glorious gospel word by which we were called into relationship with Christ and that continues to supply us with daily hope and joy. We must never grow weary of singing about the Good News of the gospel. The gospel is not only good for the sinner in that it offers hope and forgiveness for all who will cast themselves upon Christ and His sacrifice for their sins, but it also gives daily hope to the believer. All of us need to be daily reminded of the gospel. Singing timeless hymns that proclaim glorious doctrinal truths, gospel songs and spiritual songs that proclaim gospel truths and our personal testimonies, and psalms – scripture songs – that help to implant gospel truth in our minds all assist us in better understanding the glorious grace of God.

As an ordained minister who has been called by God to teach God’s people I am passionate about getting the gospel right and not misrepresenting it. There are wonderful songs in each musical genre that speak of the glorious truth of the gospel. There are also songs in each genre that are weak and fail to accurately teach the truth. It is my aim to use music to help us proclaim God’s truth and to implant it in our minds by means of music. Once we have the word of God implanted within us we will live out the last part of Colossians 3:16, Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Once you grasp how glorious the gospel is, how glorious is the sacrifice Christ made for our sins (Philippians 2:8-11), how His resurrection gives us daily hope (Romans 8:11), His ascension (Hebrews 7:24), and His glorious return (Hebrews 7:28), you will want to assemble each week with your brothers and sisters in Christ and declare his greatness in song.
